Canadian Envoy Visits Bohol Marine Sanctuary, Lauds Local Conservation Efforts

DAUIS, Bohol, Philippines (PNA) – Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines David Hartman visited the Bingag Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Dauis, Bohol on April 10, 2025, commending local efforts in marine conservation and environmental stewardship.

Hartman was welcomed by Dauis Mayor Roman Bullen, along with barangay officials and members of people’s organizations.

He praised the leadership and management of the 7-hectare sanctuary, which is home to 195 giant clams and serves as a vital refuge for marine biodiversity.

“These efforts reflect a strong commitment to protecting marine ecosystems and addressing climate change,” Hartman said during the visit.

According to Jose Erwin Tuazon, the municipal environment and natural resources officer, the clams not only support biodiversity but also serve as natural buffers against the effects of climate change.

The sanctuary currently hosts 46 broadstock giant clams restocked in 2013 from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute in Bolinao, Pangasinan, and 149 juvenile clams transferred in 2023 from the Bohol Giant Clam Hatchery in Sinandingan, Ubay.

Hartman was joined by representatives from the Coastal Resource Management Division of the Bohol Provincial Environment Office.

The visit was part of a technical assistance initiative under a partnership between the provincial government, led by Governor Aris Aumentado, and Alinea International, with support from Global Affairs Canada.
