Extreme Heat Grips Western Visayas, PAGASA Warns of Health Risks

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) issued a heat index forecast Tuesday, warning of extreme heat across several areas in Western Visayas on April 15, 2025.

According to PAGASA, Dumangas, Iloilo Province, recorded the highest heat index at 43°C, classified as “extreme caution.” Iloilo City, Roxas City in Capiz, and Mambusao, Capiz, all registered a heat index of 40°C, falling under the “danger” category. The forecast for April 16 shows a slight decrease in Dumangas to 42°C, while the other areas remain at 40°C.

The heat index, or apparent temperature, measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with actual air temperature.

PAGASA categorizes heat indices of 33°C to 41°C as “extreme caution,” where heat cramps and exhaustion are likely, and 42°C to 51°C as “danger,” with heat stroke probable with continued exposure.

Authorities urged residents to take precautions to avoid heat stroke and related illnesses. “Limit time spent outdoors and drink plenty of water,” PAGASA advised in a statement. More information on preventing heat-related illnesses is available on the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Western Visayas Facebook page.
